I find that the children of many chicano leaders are way more conservative (not in a good way, either) than their activist parents, and also benefit from wearing their parents’ achievements on their sleeve. In this case Julián Castro’s run for the presidency has been close to milk toast (mariachi festivities and papel picado notwithstanding), not really stepping out of his comfort zone until Alexandria Ocaso Cortez and the more progressive congresswomen showed up and made it easier for him to squeak out a message. Where was his defense of immigrant human rights when his mentor Barak Obama, the Deporter in Chief, was idefinitely detaining immigrants families and separating them, as he privatized these immigrant concentration camps for profit?
